One thing that's interesting is that the man's body is described as mummified. Dead bodies typically decompose if they aren't embalmed or prepared.
A few years ago I saw a program on the Discovery Channel, about a sect of Japanese monks that try to prepare their bodies for mummification while they're still alive. This involves years on a near-starvation diet, reducing the body's fat content (fat being an obstacle to natural mummification), as well consuming a kind of tree sap that would both cause dehydration before death and fight decomposition afterwards.
